Tercentenary Park is located in the downtown area of Bay St. Louis. It was established in 1999 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the city's founding. Over the years, the park had become somewhat unsightly with only routine city upkeep. One of our members presented the club with an opportunity to make the park attractive and welcoming again for citizens and visitors. She developed a renovation plan that was accepted by the club. The project included removing dead and overgrown plants and replacing them with new plantings, repairing or replacing existing and missing benches, and completing a top-to-bottom refurbishment of the park. Not a single area of the park was left untouched. Work included new plantings, weeding, sodding, installing pavers and rose bushes, power washing, and much more. After the new and existing plants were selected and placed, metal identification tags were ordered and installed showing each plant's common and scientific name. When the project was completed, the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, of which we are a member, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to recognize the refurbishment. We are currently working to have Tercentenary Park certified by the Mississippi Wildlife Federation as a Wildlife Habitat. Arbor Day is an opportunity to inform the community and raise awareness of the importance of trees in our environment by publicly celebrating "Arbor Day" with the planting of a magnolia tree at Saint Clair Catholic Church in Waveland. This was especially important in 2025, as trees on the Coast are still recovering from previous hurricane damage and are further impacted by drought and unseasonably warm temperatures. Magnolias are well suited to our coastal climate. They provide us with shade during hot weather and beautiful flowers to enjoy. In 2025, we partnered with Saint Clair Catholic Church to promote and publicize Arbor Day on the Coast. We worked with the church to find a suitable location for the tree. We arranged for the planting to take place during a regularly scheduled general club meeting, with the planting ceremony becoming part of the meeting.
